Bariatric surgery may help you meet your weight-loss, health, and lifestyle goals. However, once you have undergone bariatric surgery, you will need to make lifestyle changes that will ensure that you lose weight and keep it off! Remember, this is NOT a diet but rather a weight-loss tool to help you change your life.
Nutrition
Regardless of the type of surgery you choose, you will need to work with your physician and our program's registered and licensed dietitian to construct a healthy diet plan to ensure both weight loss and good nutrition following surgery. Together, you and the dieititian will be creating a plan for your new life. Therefore, it will be important to follow the plan for the sake of protecting your health.
Before surgery, you will meet with the dieititan each month until you are approved for surgery. During that time, you will learn about healthy food choices, portion control, new methods of food preparation, and will establish beahviors to ensure your long-term weight loss success.
Lifestyle
Undergoing bariatric surgery is a major life-changing experience. You will have a whole new set of lifestyle guidelines for maintaining your weight loss and health goals. In the years leading up to the surgery, you may have struggled with the physical, medical, emotional, and social ramifications of obesity. Bariatric surgery may signify the beginning of your healing process in these areas.
Support Group Meetings
Meet the challenges of your journey toward a healthier you with on-going education and support. By participating in support group meetings, you will have an opportunity to interact with others who have experienced their own struggle with obesity, which can help you understand more about yourself and help you stay motivated.
Support group meetings are held twice monthly at Hahnemann University Hospital.
