To get started with the Center for Surgical Weight Loss, you will need to do the following:

Attend a free education seminar hosted by Hahnemann University Hospital. During the seminar, you will learn about bariatric surgery, the procedures offered, the benefits and risks of surgery, what makes a good surgical candidate, and what you can expect through each stage of the weight-loss process. Determine if your insurance covers bariatric surgery
Medical insurance coverage for weight-loss surgery varies by insurance provider. You can check with your insurance provider to see if the procedure is covered or the Center for Surgical Weight Loss program team can communicate with your insurance company to determine if you have benefits for bariatric surgery.
Unfortunately, some insurance companies exclude bariatric surgery as a covered benefit. Here are some options to consider in the event that your insurance plan does not cover weight loss surgery.

Your employer may offer more than one insurance plan at open enrollment time. If so, do any of those plans provide coverage?

You may have the opportunity to purchase benefits on a spouse’s plan. If your primary plan has an exclusion for weight loss surgery, your secondary plan may cover your surgery.

Consultation with the surgeon
You will meet one-on-one with the surgeon. During this initial consultation, you should be prepared to discuss your medical and surgical histories, diet history, medications you are currently taking, previous attempts to lose weight and your understanding of bariatric surgery.
If following your evaluation it is decided that you are a candidate for surgery, you will begin the pre-operative preparation process.
